John Mayer | NZL

Vector Arena, Auckland

Last night I went to see John Mayer perform live with some Wellington friends – and all of us were blown away. I have been a JM fan since way back, and know most of his songs – however [notoriously bad personal rep aside] I didn’t realise quite how much of a musical genius he really is. He definitely knows it though! 🙂

John definitely follows the old adage

keep it simple.

The set was minimal, no flashy light show, and the music was real. JM hooked his audience with spectacular solos while maintaing a captivating mellow vibe – followed by foot tapping anthems, everyone on their feet singing their best rendition of Free Falling (practiced countless times in Auckland traffic). There was a common feeling left in the audience: we wanted more… But at the same time he outdid our expectations. We walked away with a post-concert buzz and sudden urge to race home and nut out some guitar practice to become the next chart topper. One day. But until then, we will continue to fall more and more in love with the dark horse that keeps lyrics true and melodies pure.

Have you ever heard the song “Something Like Olivia”? If not, Youtube it and I’ll let you in on a little secret…. The song was originally written for me, hence the title Olivia 😉

Mr Mayer also had a way with his facial expressions…
jm5 He played multiple guitars during each song (my friend told me he tours with about 49 ranging between about $10 – $100 grand each… fab, I’ll have 10!)

I was also impressed by his set list, it worked really well and took the audience on a journey. If you went to the concert, I’d love to know what your favourites were!
